A grand sunrise

Today began with the sunrise over the Grand Canyon. We surprised ourselves getting up at 5 am and arrived just in time to see the sun peeking over the horizon. (Another benefit of waking so early was no rangers at the entry of the park, which saved us the $25 fee) There were many others at the first lookout, which has the best view east, set up with tripods for photos.

The canyon was magnificent. It slowly revealed itself as the sun rose in the sky. The sunlight on the cliffs made for some pretty photos. Zach set up the tripod for a few shots of us together.

We drove as far we could around the south rim, stopping at various points for different vistas. The El Tovar hotel was our stop for breakfast, which was a warm welcome on the cold and somewhat windy morning. Our early start allowed us to see the park for several hours, and get on the road for Santa Fe.

The largest cinnamon roll ever, most of it left in a box with us.
